Gardai have launched a murder inquiry today following the death of a 66-year-old man in Blanchardstown, noth Dublin early this morning.
The man died after a disturbance in the Wellview Grove area at around 2am. A 27-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is currently in custody at Blanchardstown Garda station.
Another man was injured in the incident. He was admitted to hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
Gardai have yet to release the victim's name or confirm the cause of death. Sinn Fein representative in Dublin West, Paul Donnelly, said local people were stunned by the pensioner's death.
"The community here are totally shocked and disgusted that a pensioner could be murdered in such a horrific manner for no apparent reason," he said.
"The people of Wellview and Mulhuddart are plagued with all sorts of anti-social behaviour on a daily basis and unfortunately something like this was always bound to happen. "There is clearly an onus on the Gardai to tackle this thuggery head on.
"I urge anyone who has any information in relation to this brutal murder to pass it on to the authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice."
