Gardaí are investigating the death of a man (23) following an assault in Sligo early this morning.
Gardaí say the attack happened at Joe Mc Donnell Drive, Cranmore, Sligo at 1.15am. The injured man was taken to Sligo General Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 6am.
It is believed a gang wearing balaclavas set upon the man while he was outside a family member's house.
Detectives are scouring CCTV footage in the area and carrying out door-to-door inquiries in an attempt to trace the killers.
Immediately after the attack a dark-coloured Ford Focus car was seen speeding away from the estate not far from the town's centre.
The Garda Technical Bureau and the State Pathologist were to attend the scene today.
"Investigations are ongoing and at this stage no arrests have been made," said a Garda spokesman.
