The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is investigating a fatal accident yesterday at the ESB electricity generating station on Great Island, Co Wexford.

A Co Antrim man, who was working as a contractor for a heavy engineering firm at the station near Campile, was pronounced dead shortly after 11 a.m., having fallen 30 feet from a gantry. He had been working on the maintenance and overhaul of an air heater.

A post-mortem examination is to be carried out at Waterford Regional Hospital on the man, who was in his mid-40s. An ESB spokesman said last night it was co-operating fully with the HSA investigation and would also conduct its own inquiry into the incident. He extended sympathy to the dead man's family.
