Gardai were yesterday investigating the cause of a crash in which one man died and three others were injured on the Midleton bypass - less than 100 yards from where two sisters were killed less than a fortnight ago.

The four men - all aged between 18 and 20 - were travelling in a Ford Fiesta towards Cork when it apparently veered out of control and ploughed into a crash barrier dividing the two sides of the dual carriageway.

Midleton Fire Brigade were called to the scene and had to use cutting equipment to remove the men. The man - believed to be the driver - was pronounced dead at the scene while the other three were rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

According to a hospital spokesperson, one of the three was in a critical condition, a second was described as serious but stable while the third was later discharged. Gardai have not released the name of the dead man until all relatives are informed. Earlier this month, sisters Fiona (25) and Marie Higgins (23) died when their Ford Fiesta crashed into a similar railing protecting a flyover on the bypass less than 100 yards from yesterday's fatal accident.
