One man has died and another has been taken to hospital after they were overcome by fumes while working on a septic tank at a hotel in Co Cork.

The incident happened at the Garryvoe Hotel, Ballycotton Bay, Castlemartyr, between 1pm and 2pm as the men were attempting to remove sewage from the tank.

One man in his late 20s was pronounced dead at the scene, while another man in his early 30s was rushed by ambulance to Mercy University Hospital. The condition of the injured man is not thought to be life-threatening.

The men were said to be employees of Munster Drains, which had been tasked with cleaning the tank.
