A young man has died in Derry after he entered a river after he reportedly left the scene of an incident that had been reported to police.

Police said they were called to a disturbance in the Glenshane Road area of Drumahoe just before 5pm this evening. When they reached the scene, two men made off and one of entered the River Faughan, a PSNI spokeswoman said.

She said police officers attempted to assist the young man when he got into difficulty. He was pulled from the river in an unconscious state but died at about 6.30pm.

The PSNI spokeswoman said the Police Ombudsman had been informed.
