A YOUNG man driving a stolen car died when the car collided with another vehicle in Sandyford, Co Dublin shortly before midnight on Sunday.
Gardai last night named the dead man as Dennis Dunne (20), of Lealand Close, Clondalkin, Co Dublin.
He was brought to St Vincent's Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle received treatment for minor injuries in Loughlinstown Hospital and were allowed home early yesterday.
A Garda spokesman said investigations into the incident at Blackglen Road, Sandyford were continuing. He confirmed that the car driven by the dead man had been stolen.
He said that while there had been a decrease in the incidence of so called "joyriding" in recent months, the force was proceeding with training its members in anticar theft devices.
These include special tyre cutting chains which can be laid on a road in the path of a car and will bring a car to a halt when the tyres deflate. The Garda spokesman said the chain device would not be used to stop a stolen car but could be employed when a stolen vehicle had been used in committing a serious crime such as hijacking and armed robbery.
The chains have been used in Northern Ireland for many years, and were in use at permanent British army roadblocks.
While there has been a decline in the number of incidents involving stolen vehicles in recent months in Dublin, a number of very serious incidents have occurred.
Last September, two shots were fired at a Garda car following a chase which ended in Rathgar when the stolen vehicle crashed.
