The body of a young man was taken by Naval Service divers from the Lee in Cork on Saturday night. It is understood that the man, whose name has not been rel eased, had been missing for some days. Because of restricted access to the river bank, the body had to be taken from the water through a first-floor apartment. The diving team was under the command of Lieut John Leech.
In Co Meath, a man died when his car struck a ditch on the Clonee-Kilbride road at 12.20 a.m. on Saturday. Mr Stuart Farrell (29), from Rowan, Clonee, was thrown from his vehicle on impact and pronounced dead at the scene.
Another accident outside the village of Craughwell, Co Galway, on Saturday night claimed the life of a local man, Mr Jack Healy (88), from Cregg.
The accident happened when two cars collided on the main Dublin-Galway road at 9.50 p.m. Mr Healy, who was driving one of the vehicles, was taken to University College Hospital Galway where he died from his injuries.
A 40 ft yacht, the Trinculo, was towed to shore following a manoverboard and dismasting incident during a gale-force gust off Ireland's Eye, Co Dublin, yesterday. The Howth lifeboat and an Irish Marine Emergency Service rescue helicopter were launched. Nobody was injured. A crewman was washed overboard but was recovered when the yacht turned to retrieve him. The mast was broken in two places and the engine was rendered useless.
The IMES helicopter arrived shortly afterwards, followed by the lifeboat, which took the yacht in tow.
A Swedish yachtsman was rescued after getting into difficulties off the Co Down coast at the weekend. The Newcastle lifeboat was launched after the 27 ft craft, with one man on board, got into trouble near Ardglass.
