A man in his 50s died yesterday after being electrocuted when the lifting equipment on his truck struck overhead cables at a halting site in Trim, Co Meath.

Mr Seamus McMahon, from Mullagh, Co Cavan, was removing scrap metal from the site at New Road when the accident occurred. According to eyewitnesses, Mr McMahon was standing at the side of the lorry working the lifting gear to raise the scrap metal on to the vehicle. He did not appear to see the overhead cable.

Mr McMahon, married with three children, is believed to have died instantly. He was taken to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan where he was pronounced dead.
