A CORK man who accidentally knocked his wife down while drunk is already serving a “sentence”, a court has been told.

David O’Connor (49) of Castle Avenue, Carrigtwohill, got into his car to reverse the vehicle after leaving the Castle Tavern pub in Carrigtwohill on January 9th last.

Mr O’Connor appeared to knock his wife over and was unaware where she was until he saw her lying on the ground, Midleton District Court heard.

Mrs O’Connor was injured and was brought to hospital. Her husband was arrested for drink-driving. The incident was a “complete accident” and Mr O’Connor co-operated fully throughout the investigation, Garda Carmel Cooney told the court.

Solicitor for the defendant Denis Healy told Judge Olann Kelleher any additional sentence the judge might impose would be in addition to the sentence Mr O’Connor is serving. “He will be her long-term carer for some time,” said Mr Healy who described them as a “loving couple”. “Such an unfortunate incident, you can’t imagine the devastating effect it had on the family.”

The judge fined Mr O’Connor €1,150 and disqualified him from driving for five years.
