Gardaí have confirmed that a man found dead at Old Dublin Road in Carlow town yesterday morning died as a result of an assault.
The single man has been named as Michael Murray (61), who lived in the town. Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Old Dublin Road area early on June 12th, and who may have witnessed anything, to contact them at Carlow Garda station on 059 9136620.
Mr Murray was originally from Athy, Co Kildare, but had been "sleeping rough" in the town. State pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy examined the body at the scene. The remains were taken to Waterford Regional Hospital, where a postmortem took place.
Mr Murray's body was discovered by a priest "on his way to say Mass" at about 8am. Supt Pat Kavanagh, who is leading the investigation, said there "was blood at the scene and there appeared to be injuries to Mr Murray's face".
However, he said he was awaiting the results of the postmortem.
