A man who got married a few days ago in Mexico has been remanded in custody after being charged with three air rage offences.
Athenry District Court heard yesterday that the pilot had to divert to Shannon airport because of the incident.
Scott Watson (33), Tintwhistle, Floest, Derbyshire, will appear before Shannon District Court tomorrow. He was refused bail.
He pleaded guilty to three charges, which included being intoxicated on a flight from Cancun in Mexico to Manchester. It is understood his wife stayed on board after her husband was arrested and taken off.
Watson, a builder, pleaded guilty to threatening and abusive behaviour, being intoxicated while on board and behaviour likely to cause serious offence or annoyance.
Garda Chris Power of Shannon Garda station gave evidence of arresting Watson at Shannon airport at 7.05am yesterday. He said that Watson made no reply after being charged.
Supt Noel Kelly said the captain of a Thomas Cook Cancun-Manchester flight had made an unscheduled stop at Shannon after Watson became disruptive.
He said Watson was insulting and very aggressive on board and was very intoxicated.
Supt Kelly said that he had no record of previous convictions and that it would probably be tomorrow before such records would be produced.
Defending solicitor Rachel Dobson asked that her client be granted bail as he was alone in the country at the moment. She said he would adhere to the strictest bail conditions, would give up his passport and would sign on daily.
However, Judge Joseph Mangan remanded Watson in custody to appear before Shannon District Court tomorrow.
