A man who had been in Garda custody returned to a Dublin city station this morning, broke in and removed a bullet proof vest and an air rifle, it has emerged.
The incident took place at 8.15 a.m. at Fitzgibbon Street Garda station in the city. The man was later arrested in the Sean McDermott Street area and the items recovered.
He is being held under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act at Store Street Garda station.
Gardaí have recovered an air-rifle and bullet proof vest but would not comment on a claim by Labour party deputy Joe Costello that a quantity of drugs and a weighing scales were also missing.
Speaking on RTE's Five Seven Live, Deputy Costello claimed that a garda search of the suspect's home and environs was ongoing and questioned why this was so.
Garda said earlier the man had escaped from custody and made off with the items.
