Spanish police have arrested a man in connection with the suspicious death of his Irish partner (59) in Alicante yesterday.
The woman is reported to have died from a fall in her country house outside the village of Almoradí south of Alicante.
However, police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to see if she died as a result of a blow to the head or a fall.
Earlier a neighbour said she had seen the couple at a bar. It is reported they returned to their nearby house in the town where police believe a row developed.
The man called the emergency services shortly after 5am saying the women had suffered from a fall.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the police later arrested the man under suspicion of murder.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said it was offering consular help to the family of the victim.
