Almost two years after a Kilkenny immigrant was shot dead in a New York bar, detectives have arrested his alleged killer in a Maryland suburban caravan park.

Detectives arrested Miguel Valerio on Monday night for the murder of Mr Francis O'Loughlin, who was shot in a bar in Queens on September 5th, 1998, said Det Madelyne Galindo, a police department spokeswoman.

The arrest followed tip-offs following the popular television crime programme, America's Most Wanted, which features true stories of fugitives wanted in the United States.

Mr O'Loughlin (32) died after being shot once in the back of the head in the Mad Ass Tavern, a busy Irish bar in New York's Sunnyside district. Police believe the two men were involved in a dispute. The arrest brought a measure of closure to Mr O'Loughlin's father, who waited for two years for word on his son's killer.
