Gardaí are continuing to question a man in Waterford this afternoon after an armed standoff in the city last night.

Armed support units were called to Waterford city after a 34-year-old man began the standoff on top of his apartment building at about 5.30pm.

It is understood that the man barricaded himself into the apartment and then made his way to the roof, waving the gun.

All of the streets surrounding Penrose Lane, in a perimeter from the quay, Thomas Hill, Bridge Street and The Glen, were cordoned off while gardaí evacuated residents from many of the apartments in the street.

Gardaí were drafted in from Waterford and surrounding counties such as Wexford and Kilkenny.

Large numbers of locals gathered close to the scene.

The standoff came to an end at 11.10pm when the man was arrested.
