Fines expected for dairy farmers

Despite repeated warnings from the Department of Agriculture and Food, Irish dairy farmers have over-produced milk this year and face record-breaking fines , writes Seán MacConnell.

The milk year ended last Wednesday with most of the co-operatives and milk processors reporting that quotas had been exceeded and fines could be higher than the record year of 1995/96 when farmers were fined €18 million.

Ireland is allowed to produce just over one billion gallons of milk annually, and fines are imposed by the EU if this limit is exceeded.

While each individual farm carries a quota, it is possible within the co-operative structure for fines to be avoided if other suppliers to a co-op do not fill their quota.

However, early indications are that the major co-operatives are all over-target this year.

Minister reviews peacekeepers

The presence of Irish peacekeepers in Kosovo has helped to quell disturbances between Serbs and ethnic Albanians in recent weeks, according to the Minister for Defence, Mr Smith, writes Seán Keane.

Speaking after reviewing 196 members of the 28th Infantry Group, attached to James Stephens' Barracks, who are heading to Kosovo next week, the Minister said Irish troops may well have saved lives in the war-torn country.

The ceremony in the Castle Park, Kilkenny, was attended by several hundred local people.

Mr Smith told the crowd that the safety of personnel serving overseas was of paramount importance to him, and that they were equipped with the most modern and effective equipment available.

Capt Seán O'Fatharta confirmed that the 28th Battalion would be stationed in villages surrounding the capital, Pristina, and would be part of the Swedish-led brigade.

"The situation remains tense but civil order has been restored," he said.
