There is no evidence directly linking a suspect accused of attempting to murder a man in Northern Ireland with any assault, a court heard today.
Rodney Gardiner (41), appeared at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court today charged with attempted murder.
His alleged victim, Damian Fleming (46), was seriously injured in an assault last May near his home in The Heights, Coleraine, Co Derry. His friend, Kevin McDaid (49), died in an alleged sectarian attack at the same time which was blamed on a row over flags.
A solicitor for Gardiner, from Knocklynn Grange, Coleraine, said: “There is no evidence at present available to the courts which indicates he was directly involved in any assault on any individual on any date.”
Detective Christopher Cooper said that was correct. However, he added that he believed he could connect the accused with the charges.
The solicitor, who refused to give his name, said: “Throughout five interviews beginning in December this man has denied any involvement whatsoever in this matter.”
Mr Gardiner spoke only to confirm that he understood the charges. He was released on bail of £500 and must report twice a week to police.
District Judge Richard Wilson ordered him to reappear at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court on April 26th.
