A man (47) appeared in court today in connection with the shooting last Tuesday of a female supermarket worker in Balla, Co Mayo.

Vincent O’Donnell, Knocknabrone, Mayo Abbey, Claremorris, appeared before Judge Mary Devins at a sitting of Ballina District Court.

He is charged with with assaulting Dympna Walshe, Kiltimagh Road, Balla on May 31st at Gaughan’s Costcutters on Main Street, Balla, causing her serious harm contrary to Section 4 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Det Gda Roisín Loftus said that when charged at Castlebar Garda dtation, the accused replied: “I am really sorry for causing harm to Dympna Walshe. I have destroyed my life with it as well. Sorry to Dympna’s family and the McNamaras”.

Defence solicitor Gary Mulchrone told the judge his client required psychiatric assessment.

Judge Devins remanded the accused in custody to appear before Harristown Court, Castlerea, Co Roscommon, on Friday, June 10th. She requested medical assessment and treatment for the accused if deemed necessary.

Ms Walshe is recovering from her injuries at Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar.
