One of two men wounded in two stabbing attacks yesterday, one in Cavan town and the other in Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin, remained in a critical condition in hospital last night.
The victim of the second incident was also recovering in hospital but his injuries were not said to be life-threatening.
The first attack took place at about 2am at a party in a house in Cavan town. Gardaí were called to the scene in the Aughnaskerry estate after fighting broke out.
When gardaí reached the scene they found a 20-year-old man lying on the pavement outside the property. He had been stabbed a number of times in the chest and stomach and had lost a large amount of blood.
He was taken by ambulance to Cavan General Hospital but was later transferred to the Mater hospital, Dublin. He remained there last night where his injuries were said to be critical.
Gardaí in Cavan have arrested a 22-year-old man in relation to the incident. He was being questioned at Cavan town Garda station where he was being detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
He can be detained for 24 hours after which he must either be charged or released.
The Irish Times understands the injured man is known to gardaí in Cavan and had just been released from prison after serving a drugs-related sentence.
He had recently begun a relationship with an eastern European woman based in Cavan town. The man being questioned last night is a foreign national.
In the second stabbing attack, a man in his 30s was injured in a street fight in Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin, yesterday. Gardaí were called to the scene of the fight on George's Street at 12.10pm.
They found the injured man with stab wounds and arrested a second man, also in his 30s. The injured man was treated at the scene and was then taken to St Vincent's hospital.
His injuries are not life threatening.
Garda sources said the row was believed to be drug-related. The man being held was being questioned under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
He can be held for 24 hours without charge.
