A 23-year-old man has been remanded in custody with consent to bail after being charged with dangerous driving causing the deaths of a mother and daughter near Galway city on Wednesday morning.

Francisco Daria, San Lodovico, Sio Saliceto, Italy, is charged with dangerous driving at Cloonacauneen, Tuam Road, Galway last Thursday, which caused the deaths of Joan Reilly and her daughter Siobhán, of Cloon, Claregalway.

When charged, the accused replied: "It was an accident. It was not my fault."

Judge Mary Fahy remanded Daria in custody with consent to bail on his own surety of €500 and one independent surety of €12,000, one-third to be lodged in cash.

Bail was granted on condition the accused reside in this jurisdiction, that he surrender his passport and not apply for a new one.

He is to appear again on Monday.
