A man who died while in Garda custody on Saturday died of natural causes, a postmortem has revealed. The 40-year-old man died at Monaghan Garda station at about 2.30am.
He had been arrested about an hour earlier over an incident at his family home at Scotstown, close to Monaghan town.
He was put in a room at the station to be interviewed over the complaint about alleged disorderly behaviour. When gardaí went to interview him he was unconscious.
A doctor was called but efforts to resuscitate the man failed. He was pronounced dead at the station and his body was taken to Cavan General Hospital. The deceased, who was not married, had lived with family members. He suffered from hearing and eyesight impairment and had spent some time at a school for the deaf in Dublin.
A Garda spokeswoman said an internal investigation was under way. All deaths in custody, either in prison or at a Garda station, are investigated and a file prepared for a coroner in advance of an inquest.
The spokeswoman said it was not clear when the inquest into the Monaghan man's death would take place.
