A MAN had to be airlifted to hospital on Saturday afternoon after he was injured by a falling rock at a popular rock-climbing location which has been the scene of several accidents in recent years.

The most recent accident happened at about 2.30pm on Saturday at Ballyreen near Doolin in north Clare when the man in his 50s was struck by the falling rock.

The climber, part of a group from Dublin, was standing at the base of the rock face when the rock fell and knocked him over. He sustained a broken leg as well as other injuries. His companions raised the alarm and the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was first on the scene. He was taken by helicopter to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.
