A 22-year-old man will appear in Dublin District Court this morning on charges relating to a fatal stabbing in the north inner city on Saturday morning.
A Lithuanian man died after he was stabbed outside a flat at St Joseph's Villas, off the North Circular Road at 12.15 a.m. The incident happened near the junction of Portland Row and Summerhill.
The alarm was raised by a passer-by and the seriously injured victim was taken to the Mater hospital by ambulance. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival. A post-mortem was carried out yesterday.
The man, in his late 20s, had not been named last night as gardaí were still attempting to contact his relatives in Lithuania. He had only arrived in Ireland recently.
On Saturday evening, gardaí arrested a non-national in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, in connection with the assault. He was detained at Mountjoy Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Meanwhile, gardaí in Tallaght are seeking witnesses to a stabbing in the Old Bawn area at about 2.50 a.m. yesterday A 20-year-old victim, also believed to be Lithuanian, was admitted to Tallaght Hospital after being wounded in the attack. He was still recovering in hospital last night but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
It is understood that the man had stepped outside a house to smoke when he became involved in an altercation with a passer-by. He was attacked and stabbed several times.
