A man has been remanded in custody after being charged over the seizure last Friday of heroin valued at about €3.2 million.
Gardaí objected to bail being granted to Francis Hynes (27), of Grangeclare, Kilmeague, Co Kildare, when he appeared at a special sitting of Navan District Court in Co Meath yesterday.
Mr Hynes is charged with possession of the drug at Dunleer Road, Collon, Co Louth, on December 14th. He is also charged with possession of the drug for the purpose of selling or otherwise supplying it.
Det Gda Louise Brady of the Garda National Drugs Unit gave evidence of arresting, charging and cautioning Mr Hynes at Kells Garda station on Saturday evening. He made no reply to either charge and in court when asked by Judge John Brophy if he had anything to say he said: "No, just to say I am sorry."
Garda Brady objected to bail on the grounds and said there was a likelihood of further charges.
Judge Brophy refused bail and remanded him in custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court on December 21st.
Another man was arrested yesterday on foot of a European arrest warrant issued by the Dutch authorities and detained in Lucan Garda station, gardaí said last night.
A 45-year-old man, arrested on Friday as part of the same operation was released last night. Gardaí said a file was being prepared for the DPP.
