A Clonakilty man was remanded in custody for sentence after a jury at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin found him guilty of attempted rape and aggravated sexual assault of a young woman he met some hours earlier at a disco in a Cork town.

Brendan Buckley (28), a cobbler, of The Miles, Clonakilty, Co Cork, was acquitted by the jury of raping the woman on the same occasion, March 22nd, 1997.

Buckley had denied the charges during his four-day trial before Mr Justice Smith and claimed the woman had consented to having sex with him. Mr Justice Smith remanded him in custody for sentence on February 5th and directed the preparation of reports.

Both the victim and the accused gave evidence which agreed on many of the facts surrounding the incident but disagreed on the question of consent and associated matters.
