A man who was offered £500 to import the third-largest quantity of heroin seized in the State, valued at £1.2 million, has been sentenced to five years in jail by Judge Allison Lindsay at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

William Meredith (43), from Landen Road, Ballyfermot, Dublin, brought in the heroin for a major Dublin criminal he was once jailed with. Meredith, who also has an address at Victor Road, Kensal Green, London, pleaded guilty to unlawfully importing almost five kilograms of heroin aras, Dublin on November 5th, 1998.

Det Garda Margaret Howard said Meredith revealed he had been offered £500 to carry the drugs and was told he would get further instructions in Dublin on how the heroin was to be delivered.
