A part-time security guard who is already serving a four-month sentence for putting his pregnant ex-girlfriend's head through a window was jailed for a further six months yesterday at Galway District Court for assaulting the woman's father and producing a sword during the attack.

Nigel Fitzgibbon, Bridge Street, Headford, Co Galway, pleaded guilty to producing the sword, with a three-foot long blade, during a dispute with Mr Stephen Wall at Ashford, Cong, Co Mayo, on November 29th last, and to assaulting Mr Wall by spitting into his face.

He also pleaded guilty to damaging the cars of his former girlfriend, Ms Linda Wall, and of her father, Mr Stephen Wall, on January 19th last, causing €1,250 damage.

Garda Aidan Foley said that Fitzgibbon had visited the Wall household on November 29th to see his three-month-old child.

Fitzgibbon became very agitated and threatened to kill Mr Wall. He grabbed a sword, belonging to Mr Wall, and started to wave it at Mr Wall and again threatened to kill him. He was asked to leave the house, and after a while agreed to do so. On the way out he again threatened Mr Wall, and spat into his face.
