A 42-year-old man who broke a Garda's fingers while being arrested at his home on January 1st this year has been jailed for two years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Les Mahony, of Finglas, Dublin, was convicted of assault causing harm to Garda Aidan Flanagan. Garda Flanagan told the court that Mahony's partner, Ms Mary McCabe, had a protection order made against him three weeks before the incident.

Ms McCabe and two of her daughters complained to garda∅ on new year's eve that Mahony was drunk and abusive. Garda Flanagan and a colleague went to the house and arrested him. Mahony kicked Garda Flanagan on his hand as he was being placed inside the patrol car.

The garda said he had to undergo surgery, have his hand wired and wear a cast. He was out of work for two months as a result.
