A man who drove his car into shoppers in a pedestrianised section of a Dublin city centre street, was jailed for five years today.

Ten people were injured, two of them seriously, when 36-year-old Jacob Odubajo - a Nigerian asylum-seeker - drove at 60 mph through Henry Street in October last year.

He pleaded guilty at Dublin's Circuit Criminal Court to 10 counts of reckless endangerment and two of dangerous driving.

Judge Elizabeth Dunne said it was difficult to ascertain why the offence occurred, although there was evidence that Odubajo's mother and other close members of his family had died shortly before the incident and he had also been refused asylum in Ireland.
