A man has been jailed for four years for hijacking a woman's car at knifepoint in Co Cork.

A man has been jailed for four years for hijacking a woman's car at knifepoint in Co Cork.

Pawel Folta (28), a Polish national with an address at The Green, Dun Eala, Fermoy pleaded guilty to hi-jacking the car at knifepoint, producing a knife to intimidate the woman and stealing her mobile phone and €30 in cash

Fiona O'Farrell had stopped to get petrol at a service station on the Cork Road in Fermoy on December 8 thlast when Folta jumped into the passenger seat and threatened her. He ordered her to drive him to Cork.

Ms O'Farrell managed to escape and alerted gardai. Folta was arrested shortly afterwards.

The court heard he admitted his involvement and said he was homesick for his wife and children and wanted to catch a ferry from Cork to go back to Poland.

Judge Patrick Moran sentenced Folta to four years in jail.
