A Clondalkin man who helped a gang rob a container containing cigarettes worth £400,000 in Dublin Port has been jailed for 2 1/2 years.

The armed robbers tied up harbour police, confiscated their radios and held them in a van which they concealed in a corner of the yard behind bales of peat moss.

John Kelly (33), St Mark's Avenue, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to aiding and abetting a robbery at Pandoro Shipping Ltd at the North Wall Extension on March 28th, 1997. He is already serving a sentence for his role in a similar offence. A co-accused, Patrick Mackey (29), married with two children, of Foxhill, Athy, Co Kildare, was given a two-year suspended sentence for his role in the crime.
