A 43-year-old man has been jailed for 10 years for the oral rape and sexual assault of his niece.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to 23 sample charges for offences committed from 1991 to 1998 in Waterford. The girl was then aged between eight and 15.
At the Central Criminal Court today, Mr Justice Paul Carney said any publicity identifying the man and therefore the victim would be unlawful.
He directed that the man be registered as a sex offender and said that in imposing penalty he took account of the breach of trust involved, the age of the victim, the disparity in their ages as well as the effect the crimes had on the victim.
Mr Justice Carney imposed terms of 10 years each on the rape counts with five years for the sex assault offences. He refused leave to appeal severity of sentence. All the sentences are to run concurrently.
