Man killed after being hit by car in Co Offaly

A man in his 40s was killed when he was struck by a car in Co Offaly early this morning.

A man in his 40s was killed when he was struck by a car in Co Offaly early this morning.

The pedestrian died at around 12.45am at Frankfort, Dunkerrin, in Birr.

His body was removed to Nenagh General Hospital for postmortem. Gardaí at Roscrea are investigating.

Elsewhere, a man (22) was killed in a car crash in Co Down last night. He has been named as Cormac Fegan of Newry Road, Mayobridge.

The man was a passenger in a Rover car that collided with a Volkswagen Golf on the Hilltown Road, near Mayobridge at around 10pm.

The driver of the Rover was also brought to hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The driver of the second car was treated for shock.

Some 185 people have been killed on the Republic's roads since the beginning of the year, compared to around 172 at the same time last year.

A total of 89 of those who have died this year were drivers, while 36 were pedestrians, and 45 were passengers.
