The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) yesterday began an investigation into the death of a man in Kilcock, Co Kildare, in an industrial accident.
The man, in his 50s, died when he was struck by a lorry on the construction site of the new M4 Kinnegad-Kilcock motorway at Clooncury, Kilcock, at approximately 3 p.m.
It is believed that he was struck after alighting from a lorry he was driving. The name of the workman, who was an employee of Kilsaran Concrete, has not been released yet, but he is believed to be from the area. His body was taken to Naas General Hospital.
A HSA spokeswoman said that an investigator had attended the site yesterday afternoon. Agriculture and construction remain the most hazardous sectors in Irish industry, according to the HSA.
Its annual report for 2003 says there were 65 work-related fatalities, 17 of them in the construction sector. Another four involved people from other sectors but who were carrying out construction work.
