One man died and two others were on life-support machines at the Cork University Hospital last night after their car collided with a bollard on the main road between Clonakilty and Bandon.
The crash occurred at Lisselton, outside Bandon at 4.30 a.m. yesterday. There were heavy winds at the time but otherwise conditions were good.
There were two other men and two women in the car when it struck the bollard. No other car was involved.
The dead man was named as Mr Roy Bennett (20), The Miles, Clonakilty, a student. The women were treated for injuries and were said to be shocked after the crash but otherwise not in danger. The two surviving men were said to be fighting for their lives last night. The occupants of the car were in their 20s.
In Youghal, Mr Stephen Connors (26), a plant-hire worker, was found dead at his home at Dysart on the outskirts of the town early yesterday morning. It appears that he fell asleep as burning fat smouldered in a chip pan.
A 19-year-old woman was killed when the motorcycle on which she was a pillion-passenger crashed in Co Monaghan at 3.20 a.m. on Saturday morning. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the accident which happened at Clonkeencole on the main Clones to Roslea road.
Witnesses are also sought to an accident last Thursday in which a pedestrian in his early50s, Mr Raymond O'Malley, Buckingham Street, Dublin, was struck by a car and killed at Gardiner Street in the city at about 8.45 p.m.
