A Co Donegal man charged with committing perjury was served with the book of evidence yesterday at Letterkenny District Court.
Mr William Doherty (28), of Doorable, Manorcunningham, is denying that he perjured himself before Judge William Hamill on January 24th, 2000. At a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court in January, Mr Doherty was charged with calling members of the McBrearty family in Raphoe "murdering bastards". It was alleged that he made the comments as he drove past their premises at Meeting House Street, Raphoe, on June 28th, 1997.
During the hearing, Mr Doherty denied the charge, claiming he had been in Scotland on the date in question. But after hearing evidence Judge Hamill said he was satisfied that Mr Doherty had a case to meet.
Two weeks ago, Mr Doherty and three other Donegal men were charged with making false statements to gardai and wasting Garda time.
