A man in his twenties was arrested in Dublin's south inner city yesterday in connection with the killing of a 22-year-old man in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The man, who is from the area, was arrested at his home early yesterday morning. He was questioned at Kevin Street Garda station for six hours by detectives investigating the killing. His period of detention was extended for a further six hours and he was released last night. A file is to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The dead man, Richard Temple, from Rathsallagh Grove, Shankill, Co Dublin, was stabbed in the throat with a hollow steel bar. Mr Temple had been with two friends in the area and was believed to have been going to a party when the incident occurred at Clanbrassil Terrace.

Gardai said Mr Temple had not intended returning home that night and was planning to stay in the city centre.

Mr Temple and his two friends had met two men at about 4 a.m. at Clanbrassil Terrace. "Words were exchanged" between the two groups, according to gardai.

One of the men started attacking the three friends. Mr Temple was pronounced dead at St James's Hospital shortly before 5 a.m. and his friends were treated for injuries and released from hospital.

A senior Garda source said that gardai were not looking for anyone else in connection with the killing.

Gardai had appealed for a number of youths hailing a taxi on Clanbrassil Street to come forward. Supt John Mulderrig, of Kevin Street Garda station, said he was completely satisfied that these men had had nothing to do with the incident.
