Mr Stephen Carey (23) died three hours after he was shot in the College Avenue area of Moyross shortly after 7 p.m. on Sunday night.

The dead man was from Knocklisheen Avenue, Ballynanty, a short distance from the scene of the fatal shooting.

He had been drinking with friends on the northside estate. It is understood that one man left the group, which had gathered outside, and returned a short time later with a shotgun.

He shot Mr Carey, hitting him in the upper body. The victim was rushed to the Mid-West Regional Hospital, where he died from his injuries shortly after 10 p.m. on Sunday night.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy travelled to Limerick yesterday to carry out a post-mortem examination on the dead man at the Mid-West Regional Hospital.

Shortly after midday yesterday, a man in his early 20s was arrested in Moyross in connection with the murder.

He was being questioned last night at Henry Street Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, which allows him to be held for a maximum of three days.

According to Garda sources, Sunday's murder was not connected to the ongoing city feud that has led to four deaths since 2000.

"This incident is not connected to the feud and happened after a row broke out between a group of people who had been together earlier that day," said a Garda source.

Gardaí also confirmed last night that a brother of the dead man had received a minor injury in Sunday's shooting. However, he did not require hospital attention.

Sunday's fatal shooting is the third murder in Limerick this year.

Last April, a man was found dead in a laneway off Little Glentworth Street in Limerick city. Mr Rory Burke (25) died from fatal stab wounds and a man has been charged in connection with his death.

In February, father of six Mr Charlie Craig (40) was stabbed to death following a row over a bag of chips in the Kileely area of the city.
