A MAN appeared at a special sitting of Drogheda District Court on Saturday to face a charge of murder.
Shahzad Hussain (30), with an address at Fitzwilliam Court, Drogheda, is accused of the murder of Muhammad Arif at Fitzwilliam Court, Dyer Street, Drogheda, on the 6th and 7th of January this year.
Judge Flann Brennan was told Mr Hussain was formally charged at Drogheda Garda station by Det Garda Séamus Nolan.
The court heard that in reply to the charge being put to him he replied: “I’m sorry, I don’t want to kill him.”
He said, it was because of “the situation I saw in the bed, my wife with another man, it was very shameful”.
He said the reason he got so mad was that the other man [deceased] said, “this is not Pakistan, it is Ireland, you can do what you want here”.
He repeated he did not want to kill him and “I’m so sorry”. Garda Supt Gerry Smith, Drogheda, asked for him to be remanded to appear again at Cloverhill District Court next Wednesday, January 12th.
Defence solicitor Paddy Goodwin said there was no objection to the application.
Judge Brennan granted legal aid to the accused and he remanded him in custody to appear again at Cloverhill court on Wednesday.
