A man has been remanded in custody charged in connection with a crash that killed a woman in north Dublin yesterday morning.

Jevgenijs Aleksejevs (30), with an address at Sweetman's Farm, Skerries Road, Lusk, was charged with dangerous driving.

He was arrested yesterday morning at the scene of three-car collision on the Coast Road, Malahide, that left a woman in her 80s fatally injured. She was taken to Beaumont Hospital where she later died.

Mr Aleksejevs told Dublin District Court he was trying to overtake a car that began speeding up when the crash happened.

He was refused bail after Garda Rosemary Gallagher told the court she feared the defendant would flee the jurisdiction if released. She said Mr Aleksejevs, a married man with two children in Latvia, had no ties to Ireland and that he could face more serious charges in relation to the crash.

Speaking through an interpreter, Mr Aleksejevs told Judge Hugh O'Donnell that he would stay in Ireland if given bail.

But the judge refused the bail application, and Mr Aleksejevs was remanded in custody until January 11th when he will appear at Cloverhill District Court.

The court heard Mr Aleksejevs came to Ireland 18 months ago and was a stonemason looking for work.
