A man was remanded in custody today over the murder of 30-year-old Michael Hughes in Harold's Cross on Saturday night.
Thomas Connors (24) of Manor Court, Harold's Cross, appeared today before the Dublin District Court charged with the murder.
Judge Hugh O'Donnell remanded him in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court tomorrow.
The court heard Connors will undergo a psychiatric assessment at Cloverhill Prison regarding his fitness to plea.
His alleged victim, from Banagher, County Offaly, was found dead in the hallway of Manor Villa flat complex early on Saturday morning after suffering multiple stab wounds.
Mr Hughes was in Dublin for a friend's engagement party and was returning to his cousin's apartment at the time of the attack.
It is believed he was stabbed repeatedly with garden shears.
Connors was initially arrested near the scene but on Sunday was transferred to St James' Hospital, Dublin, where he was held under armed guard.
Gardaí confirmed he had not suffered any physical injury.
The suspect was released from hospital last night and taken to Terenure Garda Station.
Detective Inspector Gearoid Begley told the court Connors said "no reply" when charged with murder.
The defendant's solicitor, Maura Kiely requested medical treatment for her client in prison and a psychiatric assessment regarding his fitness to plea.
Connors, who stood in silence during the short hearing, wore a black tracksuit and white runners with the shoelaces taken out.
