Man remanded over Mayo shooting

A man appeared in court in Co Mayo this morning charged in connection with the fatal shooting of his father at the weekend.

A man appeared in court in Co Mayo this morning charged in connection with the fatal shooting of his father at the weekend.

John Biggins (33), whose address was given as Ballynalty, Cross, Co Mayo, appeared before Judge Denis McLoughlin at a sitting of Ballina District Court.

He is charged with the murder of his  father, Tom Biggins (71),  at Wallpark, Glencorrib, Shrule on Sunday, May 6th.

Det Sgt James Carroll gave evidence of arresting Mr Biggins last night at Mount Street, Claremorris, before bringing him to the local Garda station.

He said he charged Mr Biggins at 10.21pm. After caution, the accused replied: “I have nothing to say”.

Solicitor Sean Foy, representing Mr Biggins, applied for medical attention for his client while in prison.

Judge McLoughlin said he was aware that the accused had received continuous medical care in hospital over a number of years both as an inpatient and outpatient. He granted an application by Insp Joe Doherty for the accused to be remanded in custody to appear at Harristown Court at Castlerea Prison on Friday.

Tom Biggins died from gunshot wounds at University College Hospital, Galway shortly after being taken by ambulance from his isolated farm to the hospital. Mr Biggins was married with a large family and had an extensive holding of land on the northern shoreline of Lough Corrib
