The Garda Ombudsman Commission will investigate the arrest of a 32-year-old man who died less than four hours after he was released from custody.

The Garda Commissioner, Noel Conroy, has referred the death of Kevin Murphy to the ombudsman, the ombudsman's office announced yesterday.

Gardaí arrested Mr Murphy at about 2pm on September 20th last on Thomas Street, near Christ Church cathedral, for public order offences.

He was brought to Kevin Street Garda station and released at 3.20pm, after being charged.

Mr Murphy apparently returned to the area after his release, and he was found at 7pm near Christ Church cathedral and taken to hospital.

He died shortly afterwards in St James's Hospital, the ombudsman's office said in a statement yesterday.

The ombudsman's office has appealed for information from anyone who saw Mr Murphy that day.

The ombudsman's office is particularly interested in speaking to anyone who witnessed the 2pm arrest on Thomas St, just across from St John's Church.

The ombudsman is also interested in speaking to anyone who saw Mr Murphy in the hours after his release from custody.
