A man who met and escorted two drug couriers with £300,000 worth of cannabis from Dublin Airport has been given a five-year suspended sentence. It was the first time that a drugs "meeter and greeter" had been successfully prosecuted, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court was told.

Alan Connolly (22), of Old Bawn, Tallaght, pleaded guilty before Judge Kieran O'Connor to conspiring to import the drugs on September 17th, 1995. Det Garda John Daly said Connolly was under surveillance by the Customs National Drugs Team as he waited at Dublin Airport for the drug couriers to arrive.

He met two passengers and spoke to them before escorting them to the car-park. Some 30kg of cannabis was recovered. The two drugs couriers were later jailed.
