A man is in a stable condition in hospital after setting himself alight during a protest at an unofficial halting site in Dublin.

The man, a member of the Traveller community, received second-degree burns in the incident protest at Coolock Lane roundabout near the site last night.

“One man poured petrol on himself and set himself alight”, a Garda spokesman said.

The man was taken to the National Burns Unit at St James’ Hospital where he remains in a stable condition tonight.

It is believed up to 12 adults and a similar number of children attended the protest, which broke up after the incident.

The Travellers are in dispute with Dublin City Council plans to remove them from the site.

Dublin City Council tonight vowed to go ahead with its plans to remove the group from the site. "The council is going to the High Court tomorrow to seek an injunction to remove the Travellers," a Dublin City Council spokeswoman said.

Pavee Point, a nationwide Traveller support group, said they are in discussions with the families to try and "keep a lid" on the situation.
