A WESTMEATH man has denied in evidence at his trial that he ever looked for child pornography on the internet and said he had been shocked to be accused of so doing.

Victor Fagg (36), of Cornamagh, Athlone, has pleaded not guilty to possessing child pornography in Room 117 of DCU's Physics Block and at Crestfield Close, Whitehall, on April 19th, 2005.

Seven video files have been dropped from the prosecution case against him at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court because one of them was part of a censor-certified film that was listed on TG4's schedule a few weeks ago.

Det Garda Cathal Delaney said one of the files was an excerpt from the film A Home At The End Of The World, which stars Irish actor Colin Farrell and was on the TG4 schedule for March 22nd last.

Det Garda Delaney agreed with defence counsel Erwan Mill Arden SC that he could not say for sure if the six other video files had censorship certificates.

Mr Fagg told Mr Mill Arden: "I was searching the internet for adult pornography, never child pornography." He told Mr Mill Arden that he browsed the internet for adult porn "almost daily" and "often at work".

Mr Fagg said he didn't always check what files he saved because he would often go for a coffee-break while the computer was downloading the material and those files could remain unopened.

He said he was "suicidal" when he had to resign from his DCU job and that he would soon be resigning from his post as a Battalion Sergeant in the FCA, the Irish Reserve Defence Forces.
