A man has been arrested following a fatal shooting in Co Louth early this morning.

A man has been arrested following a fatal shooting in Co Louth early this morning.

A Garda spokesman said a taxi pulled up outside a house at Cluain Ard, Lis Na Dara, Dundalk at about 4.00am.

A lone gunman approached the car and fired a number of gunshots into it.

A 35-year-old man sitting in the back was killed while the male taxi-driver (48) and a 21-year-old woman, who was a front seat passenger, were injured.

They were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Dundalk to be treated for their injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.

The dead man was named locally as James Hughes from Crossmaglen,  Co Armagh.

A man (32) presented himself at Carrickmacross Garda station a short time later. He was arrested and is being questioned under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.

Gardaí do not suspect a paramilitary or gangland motive for the killing.
