A man is recovering in hospital after being shot in the legs in Belfast yesterday, writes Louise McCall. His condition is described as stable after he was found in Enfield Street in the Woodvale area of Belfast.
The RUC has appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact detectives, on 01232 650222.
Meanwhile, several security alerts occurred yesterday. A suspicious object was found at Knocknagoney Drive, close to RUC offices in east Belfast and the area evacuated. It was later declared an elaborate hoax. A security alert at a railway crossing at Niblock Road in Antrim was raised around 10 a.m. Bomb disposal experts found a firework with nails attached.
Earlier, the Alliance party appealed for loyalist paramilitary flags to be removed from the Kings Road at the Tullycarnet estate in Belfast. The UDA flags were put up shortly before the Twelfth of July, but Mr Michael Long said the flags were intimidating to Catholics and were an attempt to establish control within the estate.
"The appearance of these flags, which are in support of terrorist organisations, is disgraceful, given that they have killed large numbers of people, and they should be removed," he said.
