Man steals €5,000 in city hold-up

An armed man held up staff at a Dublin city centre post office yesterday before escaping in a taxi with €5,000 in cash.

An armed man held up staff at a Dublin city centre post office yesterday before escaping in a taxi with €5,000 in cash.

The raider was carrying a gun when he went into the post office on Merrion Row in Dublin 2 at 10am and threatened staff.

The man fled the scene and walked to a nearby hotel, where he got into a light blue Skoda taxi. The taxi drove up Merrion Street near Government Buildings and turned on to Baggot Street. No one was hurt in the incident.

The suspect is described by gardaí as about 50 and with an English accent. His appearance is of heavy build and he was wearing glasses, a dark jacket and a hat, gardaí said.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who may have seen the suspect acting suspiciously in the Merrion Row and Merrion Street area to come forward.
